When the Effects of Trauma Linger

Trauma is not only about what happened. It is about what your system had to do to get through it.

When stress or instability happens over time, the nervous system adapts. These patterns can continue long after the original conditions have passed.

How Trauma Shows Up

You may notice:

  • You feel stuck in cycles of overwhelm or shutdown

  • You struggle to trust your own reactions or needs

  • You overfunction or take on too much

  • You feel distant or guarded in relationships

A Nervous System Under Strain

When the nervous system has been under prolonged stress, it can become organized around survival.

You may notice:

  • You feel constantly activated or anxious

  • You experience periods of numbness or disconnection

  • You have difficulty staying present

  • You feel like your body is reacting faster than you can think

Trauma and Relationships

You may notice:

  • You have difficulty trusting others

  • You feel sensitive to shifts in tone or distance

  • You fall into patterns of people pleasing or over-accommodating

  • You feel caught between wanting closeness and protecting yourself

How I Work with Trauma

In working with trauma, your past is important, but our work does not stop at understanding what happened. We focus on how these patterns are living in the present, where change becomes possible.

Part of the work is helping your system gradually relearn what it feels like to be safe.

Who This Work Is For

This may be a good fit if:

  • You feel chronically on edge or shut down

  • You struggle with trust, boundaries, or connection

  • You feel shaped by your past in ways that are hard to shift

I offer virtual therapy across Colorado, including Fort Collins, with in-person sessions available in Longmont (Niwot area).
